‘Health Care

We Can’t Wait!’

UFCW 8 represented at event in Washington, D.C.

Adelegation from UFCW 8-Golden State joined more than 10,000 fellow Union members and allies at “Health Care We Can’t Wait,” a gathering organized by Health Care for America Now in Washington, D.C.

“Comprehensive health care reform is a critical priority for our country,” President Jacques Loveall said. “Our current system is broken and needs to be fixed now.” Health Care for America Now is a national grassroots campaign of more than 1,000 organizations in 46 states representing more than 33 million people.

It is dedicated to achieving quality, affordable health care for all Americans this year.

The organization supports a public health insurance option as part of health care reform. “The rising costs of health care services and insurance coverage are taking a toll on family budgets, businesses and public programs,” Loveall said.

“The financial burden that results from these growing costs forces many people to postpone care or choose between food and health care.”

Event participants met with elected representatives from their home states, urging them to support a public health insurance plan option that provides comprehensive services.

The event culminated with a rally on Capitol Hill that included remarks by former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean, representatives from Organized Labor and other groups that support health care reform.

Dean took the stage to loud cheers. “We are here and we’re not going away,” Dean said. “We voted for change a few months ago. We expect change. And if we don’t get it, there’s going to be more change.”

Loveall said the meetings with elected officials and the rally “hit the mark.”

“Whenever Union members and others turn out in big numbers, it has an impact,” he said. “We showed we are determined to work for health care reform that will make a difference in the lives of all Americans.”

Anew study from the University of California at Berkeley confirms what union members have known for many years that union workers have better, more family friendly benefits than non-union workers.

The university’s Labor Center reported that union members, on average, have more paid family leave, more paid sick days, better and more affordable family health insurance, and better child-care benefits than non-union employees have in similar industries.
